We created this guide to help make your portrait session experience something you’ll look back fondly on for years and years to come. At the end of the day, though, the location you choose and the outfits you select won’t matter nearly as much as the experience.

Your future memories are the most important thing to us, and we want your session to be a time for you to just be yourself and enjoy it. Have fun.  And we will take care of the rest!

PREPARING YOUR LOOKS

Let us help take the stress out of coordinating your outfits:

How to Mix Colors

The goal for coordinating great outfits for a portrait is to visually break up the colors and shades. Your look will be cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” In fact, we recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow your personality to shine through.  We encourage you to think about planning each outfit with “dominant colors” and “accent colors” in mind. A dominant color is the color that you see the most in an outfit, while an accent has a smaller piece of visual real estate.

We love accessories!!! Belts, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention. This is a great way to express your personality and add a pop of color to an outfit.

Mixing Up the Pieces

If you have a particular feel or an aesthetic that partners with your home or business keep within that color palette so we can mix and match pieces during your session.

Remember, ultimately these photos will look best if you are comfortable. Have fun and wear your personality!

PREP

It is so important to save yourself some stress by getting your nail and hair appointments scheduled for your session. So, after we have you booked in get those appointments booked too!  We recommend classic nail colors that won't distract and make sure your have enough time to feel good about styling your hair for the session.  Better yet, ask if your stylist has time to book you in for a style before the session!  A little pampering never hurts!

The day before your session, take care of yourself.  Make sure you eat healthily, drink lots of water and get good rest.  You want to look your best and all these elements will lead to a fresh face and energy for the session.  You could throw in some yoga or stretching too!

Makeup!  What looks good day to day isn't always the look you want for your images.  So you have a couple options, book a makeup artist or practice!

A fresh look is always classic.  Light skin coverage in the problem spots and a smokey eye or lined eye with a bold lip looks great.  When I say practice I mean get your makeup on and take a selfie without a filter.  Does it bring out your best features?  Too much, too little?  As the one retouching your images I will say don't worry about covering a blemish or if you have a freckle or scar you dislike let me know and I can help you out in processing the images.  The most important advice for makeup, or wardrobe for that matter, is wear what you feel good in!

DURING YOUR SESSION

When we meet for your session we will go over your outfits and get comfortable.  Then the real fun will happen!  I will guide you in posing and expression throughout the session.  We will create numerous looks by changing your posing, finding new backgrounds and wardrobe changes.

You might be wondering why you need more than 1 or 2 images but there are so many uses for your photos!  Whether you are being photographed for a little pampering and want an album or wall art, your dating profile needs an update, or you need new updated looks for your socials for business or personal we can help you think through how you want to use your images.

You can expect to be out for 1-2 hours.  This may sound like a long time but we will be walking, talking and having fun!

AFTER THE SESSION

Once I have finished editing your images I will invite you to review your images.  At this Reveal date we will go over our products and help you choose what fits best for you.  The options include Albums, Folio boxes, Wall Art and Fine Art Prints.  Your only job is to choose the images you love and the products to match!
